Is Music and Movement Just Child’s Play? Developing Fundamental Skills Through Preschool Music Classes
Music and Movement is incorporated into The Music Circle’s Early Childhood music classes for children aged 3 to 5. Children in these classes benefit from movement activities which lay a strong essential foundation for their first steps as musicians. There are a wide range of skills best developed during the early years and these include:
Developing Gross Motor Skills: Gross motor activities such as dancing, skipping, clapping and body percussion develop large muscles and help strengthen a child’s core, legs and arms.
Developing Fine Motor Skills: Fine motor skills are developed through doing hand gestures and playing percussion instruments. These movements can help improve dexterity, hand-eye coordination and finger strength.
Spatial Awareness: Students learn spatial awareness in these classes through dancing and moving to music. They develop an understanding of their own bodies and are more aware of the space around them and how their bodies fit into it.
Socio-Emotional Development: Socio-emotional skills are developed through self-expression, collaboration, empathy-building activities, and positive reinforcement. Children also develop confidence, teamwork, empathy and understanding of others.
Fostering Creativity: Creativity is fostered in these classes through improvisation, movement exploration and creative movement activities. Students explore different sounds, movements and rhythms.
Developing Cognitive Skills: Cognitive skills such as memory by learning songs, rhythms, and dances as well as their ability to concentrate and sustain their attention through activities are developed.
Developing Aural Skills: Aural skills necessary for instrumental learning such as solfege, pitch matching, singing, listening, call and response are developed.
Developing Pulse and Rhythms: Students are engaged in pulse and rhythms which introduce an awareness of music in relation to time, and is crucial to building strong foundations for a good understanding of music.
Literacy and Numeracy: Literacy and numeracy are reinforced in fun activities that engage students alongside the music.
In conclusion, music and movement classes are not just child’s play – they offer a multitude of benefits for children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development!
